Health and safety matters

Loading a van

Safe loading

Safe loading is paramount. It starts with load distribution. Check the weight over your axles – it's so easy to over-load them. For an accurate idea of your weight, you may benefit from on-board weighing. Load security is also essential. A loose load is a dangerous load – so, on long journeys it's worth checking that it hasn't become loose.

Best practice

In order to keep your vans tidy, invest in high quality racking – it will save valuable time wasted on looking for tools and materials. Racking can help avoid injuries by keeping the floor area clear of sharp tools and trip hazards.

Driver safety

Regarding lifting equipment, the Health & Safety Executive recommends that an individual should not be expected to lift more than 25kg/55lb in weight. Driver training on the vehicle and any ancillary equipment is key.

Producing a Driver's Handbook is an effective way to get drivers to sign up to their responsibilities and ensure safety information has been communicated to them.
