Lloyds TSB autolease reduces its carbon footprint… and saves £150,000 in a year
By reducing its own annual business mileage by 122,000, through the introduction of the new technology, Lloyds TSB autolease has reduced its carbon footprint by a staggering 44,000kg CO2*.
Lloyds TSB autolease operates on two sites, one in Sheldon, Birmingham and the other in Bury, North Manchester. Several of its core functions are split across its two sites. Face-to-face meetings between staff from the two locations require a 212 mile round trip. In February 2006, Lloyds TSB autolease introduced videoconferencing, which has had a significant impact on the business, as well as the environment.
Mark Chessman, Deputy Managing Director at Lloyds TSB autolease, explains: “After thoroughly trialling videoconferencing, we rolled out the system to the whole company last year. We now have two meeting rooms at each site that offer these facilities and we hold around 24 video conferences a month. The numbers are encouraging when you consider across an entire year we have eliminated the need for around 580 return journeys, which is 122,000 miles of business travel saved!”
Lloyds TSB autolease has calculated that, at an average cost of 12p per mile, it is saving almost £15,000 annually in fuel alone. The 240 hours that were being lost every month in travel for face-to-face meetings were also considered and calculated at having cost over £100,000 per year. If other costs are factored in, such as car hire for employees outside the company car scheme, hotel accommodation and other hidden costs, Lloyds TSB autolease estimates it has made an annual saving of around £150,000.
Mark Chessman adds: “Our planet is changing and we all need to take action now if each and every one of us is to make just the smallest of differences. Videoconferencing has been discussed for several years now, but many companies have not embraced the technology. We closely examined our business and how we could reduce our carbon footprint and this is just one way in which we plan to do it.
“We will also be speaking to our customers to share our best practice and highlight some of the lessons we have learnt. This technology is a win-win for all as it’s cost effective and helps reduce carbon emissions. We will challenge other businesses to take advantage of these benefits.”
